The Sacred Liturgy is the public prayer of the Church. Prayer itself involves a relationship—a relationship between God and you, the person praying. In public prayer such as the liturgy, the relationship also includes members of the assembly, those present and those not present.
As a proclaimer of The Word of the Lord, your most important ministry helps facilitate the public prayer of the Church in the Liturgy of the Word. This is a tremendous and beautiful responsibility—to proclaim the Word of the Lord—the word of comfort, challenge, and faith.
Here at The Shrine of the Little Flower and Parish and School of Saint Therese of the Infant Jesus, our Lectors proclaim the Word from the most beautiful marble Ambo. Carved in front of the great marble column is the Lamb of God, The Word of God seated on the Word of Scriptures. Supporting the lectern is a bronze eagle, the ancient iconographic symbol of St. John the Evangelist. His Gospel begins: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be. What came to be through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race; the light shines in darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” [ John 1:1-5]
Proclaiming this powerful message of faith, hope and love is your privilege here at Saint Therese as a Minister of the Word. You are called to proclaim—make alive and “hand on the Word of God so that it may grow strong in the hearts of the people.” [Ceremonial of Bishops]
We welcome new lectors throughout the year and provide training sessions each year. As well we provide the Workbook for Lectors, Gospel Readers and Proclaimers of the Word to each Lector in English and Spanish. Lectors are given the preference of the Mass they might normally attend in which to exercise this important and beautiful ministry.
